Plato's Republic

Why do communities and societies emerge?  Socrates and Glaucon seem to me to suggest very different responses to this question, although at least Glaucon appears not to be aware of the difference.  How would you characterize their views.  Do you find either, or something else, more plausible.

(and by the way, if you are thinking about the topic on cooperation as compared to conflict, pay attention to the parenthetical caution)
